connect two PCs in a Local Area Network (LAN)
Have you ever wanted to connect two PCs in a Local Area Network (LAN) to share the necessary files and folders between the two PCs? If your answer is yes, this article is a good guideline for you to do that.
Requirements
To connect two PCs in a Local Area Network (LAN), you need to have the following:
- Two computers, of course
- Each computer should equipped with Network Interface Cards (NIC)
- CAT5 Crossover cable
- The Operating System with network support must be installed in both PCs that we going to connect together in a LAN.
Steps to Follow
- Connect the two PCs using the the crossover cable and make sure the crossover cable is connected properly to both of the PCs.
- On one of the PC, go to the control panel\network and sharing center. Then select the “change advance sharing setting” and turn on all the setting and click the save button.
- Select the “change adapter setting” and select the Ethernet in the list. Press application or right click and choose “properties” in the context menu.
- Select the “internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPV4)” and click the “properties” button. Make sure we select the “use the following IP address” and type the IP address that we want. For example, 192.168.1.1 and click “ok” button. Note that, the IP address for two PC can not be the same.
- Repeat the steps 2 to 5 on another PC. Note that we have to change the IP address for the second PC. For example , the IP address for first PC is 192.168.1.1, the IP address for second PC should be 192.168.1.2.
- Go to the PC that you want to share some necessary files and folders with another PC then select the necessary folder and files and press application or right click and choose “share with” in the context menu.
- In the submenu, select “specific people”
- In the window, select the “everyone” option in the combo box. And click the “share” button. In the next window, click the “done” button.
Note : if you want to stop the sharing for specific folder and files, you can simply select the folder or files and press application or right click and choose “share with” in the context menu. Then, in the submenu, select “stop sharing.”
